What Are Custom Cabinets?

Your Guide to Custom Cabinetry

What Are Custom Cabinets?

Custom cabinets are individualized, based on one’s unique preferences and needs. Each custom cabinet is the culmination of the client’s specifications, such as wood type and size. It’s an opportunity to explore your creativity and be involved in every aspect of the construction.

We appreciate that every client has unique goals for their custom cabinets and wants a departure from the run-of-the-mill cabinets that many companies offer. By going the custom route with us, you can put your own stamp on things and make your cabinets truly distinctive and unequivocally yours.

From coffee cabinets and butler pantries to larder cabinets and drink stations, you can rest assured you’ll get a superior finished product and excellent communication throughout the process when you work with us.

OUR PROCESS

Construction and Materials

Top-of-the-line materials make all the difference when constructing a custom cabinet. As such, we use solid wood for all our cabinet and door frames.

Also, we make standard a lot of features that would be available for an upgrade at other places, including solid maple dovetail drawer boxes, conversion varnish, and soft close hinges and slides.

Our cabinets are assembled before being painted, and we use wood glue, clamps, and screws for greater durability.

Styles and Design

Your kitchen is an extension of your personal style and should mirror your individuality. That’s why we offer a slew of design options to complement your needs, such as hardware, finishes, and materials. To us, cabinets are more than just storage solutions—they are a way to show off your style and a point of pride in  your kitchen.

Additionally, since all our cabinets are made to order, we’re not confined to standard sizes. Plus, if you’d rather have one larger cabinet, we can combine several cabinets to accommodate.

If you’d like, we can match paint colors to popular brands like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.

Installation

Our professionals are well versed with installing custom cabinets and will ensure the fit is just right. To that end, our cabinets have extra lips on the back and sides, letting us trim on site to fit crooked walls. This makes it less necessary to use filler strips and caulk.

Custom Cabinets Vs. Stock Cabinets

There are some choices you’ll need to make when deciding on your cabinet, namely whether to go with custom cabinets or stock cabinets.

What Are Stock Cabinets?

Unlike custom cabinets, stock cabinets are pre-made by the manufacturer and can’t be altered based on preferences.

Differences Between Custom and Stock Cabinets

What are the differences between custom and stock cabinets, and what should you keep in mind when deciding?

1. Quality

The materials used for custom cabinets are of the highest quality, such as maple or birch plywood, giving them major staying power.

Unfortunately, the materials used for stock cabinets are usually of lower quality, such as particle board. Because of the lower-grade materials, stock cabinets often wear down sooner than custom cabinets.

2. Cost

While custom cabinets are more expensive than stock cabinets, they hold their value well, and last much longer than stock.

3. Customization

As the name suggests, custom cabinets emphasize customization and are tailored to exactly what you want. On the other hand, stock cabinets are frequently mass-produced.

Custom Cabinets Vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets

Beyond custom and stock cabinets, there’s another alternative called semi-custom cabinets, which is a combination of custom and stock.

What Are Semi-Custom Cabinets?

Semi-custom cabinets are similar to stock cabinets because they are manufactured in standard sizes. However, they provide more possibilities for finishing touches than stock cabinets.

Differences Between Custom and Semi-Custom Cabinets

When it comes to custom and semi-custom cabinets, there are stark differences.

1. Customization

Custom cabinets will give you the most room for personalization while semi-custom cabinets are a mix of both custom and stock. Whereas semi-custom gives you limited choices for things like color and designs, nothing is off limits with custom, allowing you to pick what best captures your vision.

2. Quality

Semi-custom cabinets are a notch above stock cabinets in terms of quality of materials, but they still lag behind custom cabinets, which are truly the gold standard for quality. Each custom cabinet is built with premium care and an unmatched attention to detail.

3. Cost

Custom cabinets are more expensive than semi-custom cabinets because of their high quality. Both short term and long term, your money goes further when you buy custom.

Are Custom Cabinets Really Worth the Cost?

Absolutely. Custom cabinets pay dividends in their value alone. They have strong, dependable high-quality components that outlast their stock counterparts, which ends up saving money in the long run.
